About Me
I love Southern California!! I say that because I’m so happy that God has brought me and my family back to San Diego from Northern Kentucky (although we used to live in Los Angeles–but San Diego is close enough!!). In October 2007, I took on the role of Pastor at Northminster Presbyterian Church in San Diego. And so far, I love it!

I’ve been married to my beautiful wife, Robin, since 2001 and have a rambunxious 2-year-old boy named Micah and a beautiful little baby girl named Macy who was born in August 2007. (It’s amazing how much I love those kids!)
Not much more to say than that. Other than to mention that I love movies, I love Star Wars, I love surfing (and I’m so happy to be doing it again, now that we’re in San Diego!), I love the ocean, I love my family, and I love Jesus.
Favorite Movies:
- Star Wars (all of them, but mostly the old ones)
- The Matrix (all three, but mostly the first one)
- Lord of the Rings (all three–uhh, yeah all three)
- The Godfather (Parts 1, 2, and 3–but mostly Parts 1 and 2)
- Spider-Man (all three–I know, I know… the third one could’ve been a lot better)
Favorite Book:
Favorite Quote:
- Luke: “I don’t believe it!”
- Yoda: “That is why you fail.”
Favorite Food:
- BBQ wings at Quaker Steak and Lube
Favorite Band:
- Mortal/Fold Zandura (same band, two different names depending on style of music)
Favorite Outdoor Activity:
- Surfing

I love the new layout! It’s very user friendly and, in an interesting blend, you have a modern layout with a vintage feel to it.
Cool.
Hey Markus…well, I’m currently from San Diego - Northminster Pres, to be exact - but I won’t be at worship this coming Sunday cuz I’m playing at another church that Sunday. But I’m one of the usual interim keyboard people at NPC as well as doing a bunch of other stuff (graphic design, theology, raising and scattering lots of ideas). Check out my blogs when you have a few. I am so looking forward to meeting you in the fall! Many blessings!
Dear Markus,
I’m a “member” (strike that) “partner” of the San Diego Presbytery and preached (filled in one Sunday) at Northminster. Judy Sperling was enthusiastic about your coming and your website, as were others, and I checked it out just now.
Very good. I like it - and your approach. It’s exactly what Northminster needs. They’re located in a good neighborhood, one that needs to be reached for Christ.
What was so interesting was that after the sermon, some folks thought it was exactly what you were planning to do and be when you get here. A brief synopsis of the message:
How did the early church grow from 12 to 1,000,000 in 70 years? (Estimated, of course). Through the Holy Spirit and one on one. Illustration Andrew: he brought his brother to Jesus, then a boy (with a lunch), then the Greeks. And that’s all we know about Andrew in the NT.
Churches don’t grow because they don’t want to grow. They are comfortable clubs, satisfied to do church work/jobs as the end-all of being a Christian, but not going into the world to make disciples. Do you know this quote from Archbisop William Temple: “The church exists for those who never go near it.” Drove that home and answered the objection: “But I can’t do that!” with “you do it all the time. You share what is important to you, sports, tv shows, movies, interests…”
I look forward to meeting you when you get here in October.
Hi Markus, I was just looking up Presb. churches in San Diego and discovered Northminster on Clairemont Mesa. I only had an opportunity to briefly read some of what you wrote, but I really liked what you had to say. I had a few questions about the church but didn’t want to post them on this main site. Can you please email me?
Thanks, Jeanene
Markus,
Congratulations on your call to Northminster!
I pastor out at Fletcher Hills Presbyterian Church in El Cajon (just about 10 miles east of your place). It was fun to read of your connection to Forest Home (our family just got back from Family Camp there) and to see what you’re reading (looks a lot like my book shelf).
Let’s grab a cup of coffee when you get to town. In the meantime, I’ll be praying that these next two months are a time of rest and replenishment for you and your family.
In Christ,
Kevin
I am moving to Seattle in a few weeks and am looking for a church. I am familiar with Donald Miller’s works. I’m wondering if you know of any churches in Seattle that Donald Miller is affiliated with.
Thanks so much,
SandyAustin
Thanks for your question Sandy! Unfortunately, I’m not very familiar with churches in Seattle. I wish I could help you more. However, “Off The Map” (http://www.off-the-map.org/index.php) has a lot of connections in Seattle. I’d check them out and maybe ask some folks over there.
Markus,
I am a member of your Father’s Covenant Group. I discovered your website yesterday and have been exploring it with great interest. I am thrilled to see what the future of ministry looks like with pastoral leaders like yourself.
Blessings and Peace.
Hi, Steve! Thanks for your comment! I’m also excited to see what God’s going to do. Don’t really what it’s gonna look like, but I bet it’s gonna be good!
I got your comment. You can hear some of the live recordings at JeffersonKim.com
But I was more out of response to the 1980s mega church “worship” music genre.
Stretchy Church?!?!?!?!?!?… hmmmmmm you’ d think that was some kind of new fangled way of presenting what we all know as good old christian values! I like it. give me a call.
We’ll do lunch, maybe a film!
Let me know
Reed
