Typical Church vs. Missional Church
Emerging Church, Missional, Church Stuff
I just came across two diagrams that distinguish between a typical church (regardless of worship style) and a missional church. Notice that the typical church focuses all its energy on the weekend worship service, using that as the foundation for everything else; while the missional church focuses its energy on the mission of the church, which leads to all the other minstries, including the weekend worship service.
I found the diagrams on the Uplake Church blog, though the diagrams are apparently originally from Tall Skinny Kiwi. Let me know what you think.

I have seen this before and have always wondered about the whole too-down model itself. My gut feels a couple of things:
one - there still seems to be a reaction against corporate worship rather than an integration of corporate worship. This is where mainline churches can offer some great foundations.
two - there still seems to be a methodology and process that is assumed and an “ideal” community lifted up.
Can the model be a cirlce, spiral, etc. with each community determining what the center would be. Christ through weekend worship might be the center for one, while Christ through service might be the center for another.
Just some thoughts. Thanks for the post!
Hey man, it’s Ryan…
I REALLY need you to get in touch with me, so please send me an email! I have some exciting news!!!!
The silence on this posting is deafening.
This is a good illustration of how the church is going to have to change its focus.
The typical church foundation illustration is BITS based (Buts In The Seats) which I don’t believe is how the church was ever intended to function.
The Missional foundation is a reasonable illustration of the outward focus which a church should have.
